I finally edited together a short video of Jag's first Indian wedding ceremony from August. We got the call at the last minute so we didn't he have a proper Indian costume, but we do now! Look for Jag's wedding website - coming soon! He was such a star. But then, we knew he would be. Thanks, Jag!
Lilian and Karen had such a good time riding with us on the weekend that they came back again for another 2-hour ride on Friday before flying home to Hong Kong on Saturday. They had a great time and so did I! They loved Pilgrim and Freckles. Thanks for riding with us, ladies. You are both good riders!
We had a great long weekend - we took many, many riders out on the trails and the weather was fabulous! Here are just a few photos we took of our great guests. Thanks, all, for choosing Glen Valley Stables for your Labour weekend fun!
He grew up on a cattle ranch in Alberta, so he knew how to ride, and she loves horses, so - if all goes according to plan, and why wouldn't it? - she's only just begun her riding life. Here's hoping for many more happy trail miles!
We love all our guests but we have a real soft spot for the little girls. They just love their horses! Thanks for riding with us, and thanks for sharing our horses with your girls - even if they're just your nieces! You two must be the best aunt and uncle EVER!
Everyone has a bucket list, and Hal and Margaret are no exception. But you don't have to wait until you're in your sixties to get on a horse FOR THE FIRST TIME! Hal had a great time on Freckles and Margaret did really well with Pilgrim. We hope you weren't too stiff after your ride (you seemed just fine!) and that we see you both again some time. Happy trails!
Yvonne really wanted to ride a horse but her family... not so much. So she decided to go ahead anyway. You were a star, Yvonne! Good luck with your horse riding future.
These two friends are spreading their wings this summer and doing things they haven't done before... things they're maybe a little bit afraid of! Before horseback riding, they went kayaking. You guys were great! We hope you have many, many great adventures ahead of you!
Karen and Lilian came all the way from Hong Kong. They didn't come just to ride horses - family was the bigger draw - but they had a great time riding on the weekend and are coming back again this Friday for a "faster" ride. How great is that?!
Dianne had a horse-crazy daughter and now she's got a horse-crazy granddaughter, Emerson. Emerson loved Pilgrim and rode him really, really well. Dianne was looking forward to spending time with her granddaughter and, as she said at least twice, "I had a much better time than I thought I would!" You're a good rider, Dianne. Thanks for riding with us!
Last, but not least - not by a long shot - is a big, extended family that came for a ride with us at the end of the holiday Monday. Some of them could ride well, others were beginners, but everyone had a great time. Thanks so much for coming out with us! You were all a very pleasant end to a very busy long weekend. Let's do it again next year!
On Sunday, after Saturday's big wind storm, Gene and I took the dog for a walk in Campbell Valley Park to see what it was like. It was walkable - lots of open places where there were just leaves and small branches on the ground - but also a few trees down and some bigger branches. These photos are from that day. But when we rode around the park ourselves on Tuesday, all the big trees had been cleared away from the trails.
And today, when Gene took guests out for a ride, everything was cleaned up - no more leaves on the trails, no more branches lying around. Good work, park crew!
The photo above shows Pepper, our dog, working her way around a big fallen branch. Horses could have got around it
But horses could NOT have got through this part of the trail. This is the stretch of trail that runs alongside 208 St. It was completely blocked - we didn't even try walking through
Most of the trail - the parts of it that pass through treed areas anyway - looked like this: messy but passable. All of those leaves are gone now, blown off onto the sides of the trails.
Another big branch on the trail and a happy dog out for a walk!
Joel said he always wanted to be a cowboy and he finally got his chance! Thanks for saddling up with us, Joel. We hope to see you riding the trails again some time
That's Brent on the left - he and I did a post-graduate program together in Asian Studies almost 20 years ago! He recognized my voice and, after talking about places we'd lived in Asia, we eventually figured out our connection. It was great seeing you, Brent, and very nice meeting your partner! Stay in touch
Here's a picture of a great family that rode with us recently. I let someone lead the little kid as I galloped ahead through the field to get this shot. Thanks for choosing Glen Valley Stables for your riding experience - we had a great time with you guys!
This little girl loves horses! She's learning how to ride and this was her first time out of an arena and in a western saddle. She did really, really well! As did her aunt, who only rides occasionally but sits a horse very nicely. It was an enjoyable hour-and-a-half on the trails
This is Shawn and his family, both resident and visiting, who rode with us last week. They were amazing. No one had much in the way of riding experience but they all had a great time. And Shawn's wife particularly impressed us with her stick-to-it-iveness after a mishap. Thanks for bringing such a positive attitude, everyone! And stay clear of those Harley Davidsons, will you? :-)
Tarek's mom bought a trail ride for him and his girlfriend, Danna, on the occasion of her birthday. They both had a good ride but Tarek wanted more - more speed, that is! So at the end, we put Danna's horse away and then I took Tarek on Traveller for a quick burn up the back trail. Mission accomplished! Thanks for the fun run, Tarek!
Here's where we share photos and memories of some of our guests and the horses they get to call their own for an hour or two. Saddle up!
